How to reduce a photo to under 200 KB for a form
Visa applications, university enrolment, job portals, government procedures: “maximum 200 KB” is everywhere, while a phone photo weighs 3 to 5 MB. Here is how to get there without ruining the image.
What makes a photo heavy
Two things: its dimensions (a 12-megapixel photo has 12 million pixels) and the compression quality. For a form, nobody needs 4000 pixels across: a passport-style photo or a scanned document is perfectly legible at 1000–1500 pixels.
So the right order is: first reduce the dimensions to something reasonable, then lower the quality only as much as needed.
The quick way
Open Compress image, choose Under 200 KB (or Under 100 KB) and add the photo. CLEKARA tries several quality levels, keeps the highest that fits and, only if that is not enough, reduces the dimensions step by step. The result shows the final weight and size, so you can check it before uploading.
When the form also asks for exact pixels
Some forms want, for example, 600 × 600 px. Use Resize image with Exact size, cropping the excess first, then compress the result if it is still too heavy.
Mistakes that get uploads rejected
Sending a PNG screenshot when JPG is required; renaming .heic to .jpg (the content is still HEIC — convert it with HEIC to JPG); and squeezing a whole multi-page document into one photo until it is unreadable. For documents, a PDF made with Scan to PDF and then compressed is usually lighter and clearer.
