PNG or JPG?
PNG is lossless: perfect for logos, text and drawings with flat colors, but very heavy for photos. JPG compresses photos by discarding detail the eye barely notices, so a 6 MB PNG photo often becomes a 600 KB JPG that looks the same.
Transparent areas become white, because JPG has no transparency. The page tells you the size before and after for every image.
When not to convert
Logos, icons and screenshots full of small text can show soft edges as JPG. For those, Compress image keeps them as PNG and still cuts the weight by reducing the palette.
