Why websites use WebP
WebP is a format from Google that makes images 25–35 % lighter than JPG, so pages load faster. Browsers show it fine, but older Windows apps, many print shops and many upload forms still only take JPG or PNG.
Your browser decodes each WebP and writes a new JPG at the quality you choose. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white; choose PNG to keep them.
Worth knowing
An animated WebP becomes a still image (its first frame).
Converting a lossy WebP to JPG cannot recover detail the WebP already discarded; it only changes the container so other programs can open it.
